On Friday, May 16, 2025, the Cyprus Olympians Association welcomed the Ambassador of Japan to Cyprus, Mr. Yoshio Yamawaki, for a cultural visit to several archaeological landmarks in the Limassol region. The Association’s President, Mr. Costas Papacostas, along with board members Mr. Charalambos Panayides, Mr. Spyros Agrotis, and Mr. Damianos Hadjidamianou accompanied the ambassador throughout the tour.
The group began their visit at the Kourion archaeological site, located on a hill just outside the vibrant city of Limassol. Once one of the seven ancient kingdoms of Cyprus, Kourion is renowned for its striking Greco-Roman theatre. To the east of the theatre lie the remains of the House of Eustolios and the Roman Agora, both key historical features of the site.
Their next destination was the Sanctuary of Apollon Hylates, an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry, and the arts. The final stop was the Kourion Stadium, which stands as the sole ancient stadium discovered in Cyprus. The stadium dates back to the 2nd century AD and could accommodate approximately 6,000 spectators. It was primarily used for athletic events such as the pentathlon during the Roman period.
Following the tour, the Cyprus Olympians Association hosted a luncheon in honour of the ambassador and presented him with two traditional Cypriot handicrafts as tokens of appreciation.
